In the artist's own words: "The Welsummer chicken is a Dutch breed. They are a friendly, intelligent bird who lays large brown eggs. I love their tall elegance and haughty look. I painted this on a red canvas and let the ground show through by using loose brushstrokes. I was fascinated by the early morning sun on the flock. You could almost see the mist burning off the wet morning grass."
